Great websites for ELT
"Can anyone suggest ideas on how to teach...?" Post-course, it's probably the most frequently asked question we get from trainees on our support group.
Whether it's ideas on teaching tenses or business English or young learners - or literally anything else you care to name - there are several ELT sites I always head to. Searching around them often produces results.
In alphabetical order
- BBC Language Assistants site
Although it's intended for language assistants, not fully-qualified teachers, but there's a lot of interest there to anyone new to teaching. The "teaching tips" and "primary tips" sections (the latter for teaching young learners) have lots of interesting things (first classes, learning vocab, classroom management, special days of the year etc...).
- BBC Lesson Plans
A weekly downloadable lesson plan based on the "Words in the News" story. Includes notes and instructions for teachers, worksheets for students and an answer key.
- DevelopingTeachers.com
DevelopingTeachers is a good place to look for ideas for lesson plans but it has lots more besides, including teacher tips and a great monthly newsletter.
- OneStopEnglish.com
OneStopEnglish comes from ELT publishers Macmillan and has lots of useful resources, lesson plans, teaching tips and so on. An interesting section on teaching 1-2-1.
Other ELT publishers
websites, most of which have similar resources.
- TeachingEnglish.org
Lots of interesting things on this British Council-BBC site. The "Think" section has lots of articles on general methodology, teaching vocabulary, teaching young learners etc, the "Try" section tips and lesson plans. Excellent.
Other sites
- Business English sites (IH Barcelona)
Many CELTA course trainees find themselves teaching Business English in one form or another, often either 1-2-1 or in-company. This page on our main site offers links to a series of useful resources.
- Search English
For anyone with a particular interest in new technologies in the language classroom, this British Council site has links to lots of articles.
- Tech ELT Blog
Our technology blog began life to accompany the session on our CELTA course. If you want some idea of how you could use technology in language teaching, it's a good place to start.
- Young Learners sites (IH Barcelona)
Most jobs in language schools, certainly in Spain, involve at least some teaching of young learners (YLs) - not something CELTA is designed to train you in-depth for. This page provides links to online resources.
We particularly recommend the links on the IATEFL YL SIG page - and membership of the SIG (Special Interest Group).
